11th September 2008

Google websites saw the bulk of online video views in the US in July, attracting 44 per cent of all viewing, comScore has said.

YouTube accounted for 98 per cent of clip views on Google sites, while Fox Interactive Media, Microsoft and Yahoo! were placed after Google in the list.

A total of 11.4 billion online videos were watched by American internet users in July, with three-quarters of the web population doing so.

On average, each watched clip lasted 2.9 minutes and each web user saw about 80 videos.

The statistics come shortly after it was revealed that Google has stepped up efforts to generate more revenue from YouTube.

According to CNET News.com and the New York Times, the websites has started to experiment with display, text and animated ads alongside its videos, while Google itself recently announced a trial of new ads for the mobile YouTube site.
