Google video sites 'remain on top in May'

15th July 2008

New figures released from comScore this week have indicated that Google-owned websites were the top US video property in May 2008.

Data from the Video Metrix service revealed that of the more than 12 billion videos watched by Americans on the internet during the month, a total of 4.2 billion were viewed on Google sites.

Of these, 98 per cent were viewed on the Google-owned YouTube.com, which has made headlines in recent months due to a copyright violation lawsuit brought forth by Viacom.

The average visitor to a Google video site was found to watch around 50 videos a month, while internet users each watched a total of 85 videos in May.

In total, 74 per cent of the American online audience viewed a video on the internet, with the average clip lasting a total of 2.7 minutes.

Other popular video sites used during May included those owned by Fox Interactive Media - with 778 million clips viewed - as well as Yahoo! video clips, which were viewed 347 million times over the course of the month.
