Bloggers earn ad revenue

27th December 2007

Advertising is making a living for blog authors and turning a hobby into a 'nice little earner' for a select few online editorials, according to a report.

Florida Today uses the example of Zach Brooks, who currently earns about £1,000 a month (about £500) by writing about cheap lunches in Manhattan.

Although the number of successful bloggers earning revenue by utilising ad programs like Google's AdSense is increasing, they are still in the minority, the report suggests.

Mr Brooks' website, Midtownlunch.com, logs about 2,000 readers every day who are fascinated and informed by his gastronomical discoveries around his area.

A 2006 survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that 39 per cent of internet users - about 57 million American adults - read a blog.

This amounted to a rise of 27 per cent in two years, Florida Today said.

One massive internet audience is the teens age group, according to emarketer.com, which found that while 37 per cent of the adult population visited social networking sites at least once a month, this figure rose to 70 per cent in the teenage bracket.
