For online advertisers that are aware of their target audience, social media networks are an ideal medium to target consumers, according to Social Media Portal.
Director of the company Tim Gibbon explained that businesses will be able to customise adverts more effectively if they are aware of users' demographics and personal details.
"They might even know who is watching it and what they're doing and how they're interacting with it and what they do from that point onwards," he said.
It opens up a "two-way conversation with the content", he explained, claiming that users can click and engage in the adverts.
According to the New York Times, Yahoo! and Google intend to use email account information to create a social network site. It will apparently provide links to friends and update users on events in a similar way to a news feed on Facebook.
