Yahoo! introduces Kickstart to social network industry

5th November 2007

Internet company Yahoo! has launched social network Kickstart in collaboration with UK website Bebo.

Kickstart is to follow Facebook's original strategy of connecting college students. However the head of the Kickstart project Scott Gatz wrote on his blog that students have "expressed frustration" that older people are now using Facebook

Yahoo! intends to create a professional network where users can start their career by looking at jobs or getting advice.

Chief executive of Yahoo! Jerry Yang said Bebo was a good choice of partner as it is already a strong social network.

"We understand a lot about what social inventory ought to do and how people are monetising it and hopefully we can be quick to take advantage of our knowledge," he added.

Yahoo! have already started to work on another social network site, Mash. However that is to have a more general 'fun' purpose compared to the career-focused Kickstart site.
