Facebook to give Google a run for its money

18th October 2007

The social network site Facebook could be the next major player in online advertising.

In response to a question about the company's future at the Web 2.0 Summit, chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg suggested advertising may be the next move.

He refused to elaborate on the comment and remained evasive when questioned further, saying the world would have to wait a few months to find out.

"People know that they're on notice. You start an ad network on Facebook, Google, be careful because Facebook's coming after you," eWeek cites, summit co-host John Batelle as saying.

Since August 2006, Microsoft has been the exclusive provider of advertising for Facebook. When asked about the company's relationship at the recent Summit, Zuckerberg responded with "I think we're both happy".

Facebook was founded in February 2004 and has grown by 366 per cent in the UK so far this year. It has received 7.6 million unique UK visitors since July, according to research by industry analyst Datamonitor.
