I am aware that social media is becoming more popular as a form of online marketing but I have little knowledge of it. What advice can you give me on how to utilise social media and how it will help my business?
Thanks
Ruth

Hi Ruth,
Thank you for contacting us.
The use of social media has grown considerably in the last couple of years and is sure to become a fundamental part of a businesses online marketing strategy. In order to get your business found in the social media world the first thing you should do is display social bookmarking icons. This gives users a quick and easy way to review your website or bookmark your website through their preferred channel. These icons are becoming commonplace now on a lot of sites such as the BBC and the Times Online, have a look at how we use bookmarks on the Epiphany website.
A few examples are as follows:
Delicious.co.uk – a bookmarking site that allows users to bookmark a site they like and access the bookmarks from any computer. If anyone then does a search on delicious to find information it will return results based on how many times it has been bookmarked.
Digg.com - is a site that allows anyone in the online community to upload any articles, podcasts, videos etc and then digg users rate it. The more digs you have, the more popular you become.
Stumbleupon.com – allows people to surf the best reviewed sites on the web. Users subscribe to receive sites on topics they are interested in, they can then give it a thumbs up, or a thumbs down.
Each of these sites can help you get your website found by people interested in your product and help create a buzz around your business or product. It also reinforces your other marketing activities. Your site will be really successful in these networks if you have something exclusive or unique to offer.
Blogging is another tool you can use. Why not start a blog on your own website. It’s a great way to share information with your stakeholders and position yourself as an authority in your industry, check out the Epiphany blog. It is also great for your website in terms of (SEO) search engine optimisation and generating leads.
I hope this brief overview has given you enough information to get you started on incorporating social media into your marketing strategy.
If you have any further questions let me know!
Thanks Bev
