Google most popular website in US during August

Google received more unique hits from Americans in August than any other website, new figures have revealed.

According to comScore's monthly rankings, the internet giant's sites were visited by just under 145 million individuals over the 31-day period, beating out nearest rival Yahoo! by more than three million.

Microsoft sites were third with over 123 million unique visitors, with AOL the only other company receiving more than 100 million hits.

Fox Interactive Media, eBay, the Ask network, Amazon, Wikimedia and CBS took up the other top ten places respectively.

Google was even more dominant when it came to the number of searches from Americans, according to the latest Hitwise figures.

The company received 71.01 per cent of all searches from the US in August, which is up from 70.77 per cent in July.

Yahoo! was second with 18.26 per cent, followed by MSN (5.32 per cent) and Ask (3.45 per cent).
