Tailored SEO 'important' for regional sites

10th September 2008

Tailoring search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies to specific regional domains can help boost a website's position in search rankings, it has been suggested.

Aaron Wall wrote on SearchNewz that region-specific rankings are clear to see for those who search for the same phrases on different Google websites and said that there are numerous things that can be done for businesses looking to target specific countries.

Spelling, language and tone are three things to bear in mind for text on the sites, while obtaining a listing on a local directory, as well opting for local hosting and local domain name extensions, can also be helpful, he said.

Mr Wall suggested that the domain name extension may actually be the most important thing a website can do, commenting: "Google places a lot of weight on the domain name, so it is important to get the appropriate country-code domain extension."

According to Search Engine Land, most SEO firms agree that it is best for websites who are targeting a specific country to be registered under a regional domain name.
