Sports websites 'benefiting from GB Olympics success'

29th August 2008

Sports-related retail and informational websites have seen significant increases in traffic as a result of the success of Great Britain in the Beijing Olympics.

This is according to new figures posted by Hitwise UK research director Robin Goad on his blog today (August 29th), which showed that UK traffic to sites in the company's sports category have risen to an all-time high.

Four of the top ten sports retail websites were related to cycling - a pursuit in which Team GB received numerous medals - while sports brand Adidas, the official team sponsor, saw the number of search queries conducted for its name rocket to its highest level this year.

"Following the success of Team GB in Beijing, we were curious to see who else benefited from the Olympics hype ... the most clear online winners were sports websites, both information and retail sites," Mr Goad said.

According to Nielsen Online, 54,000 Britons visited the official Beijing Olympics website every day between August 9th and 15th.
