A list of the best linking practices marketers can undertake to improve search engine optimisation (SEO) has been published by MarketingSherpa.
Among its recommendations are creating top quality content such as useful applications like loan calculators and turning to link bait such as quirky stories, competitions and giveaways.
Getting such pages posted to websites such as Reddit and Digg can do much for a site's inbound linking, as can actively targeting sites to post links to the website in question but only if these sites are deemed to be high quality by search engines.
When it comes anchor text, MarketingSherpa said: "Do not ask every person linking to your site to use the same anchor text. Search engines penalise sites that have too many inbound links with the same text; it skews their results."
It added: "They argue that 'naturally' created links would have more variance."
According to Mark Jackson of Search Engine Watch, creating a blog can help to generate relevant inbound links.
