MarketingSherpa recommends top linking practices

22nd August 2008

A list of the best linking practices marketers can undertake to improve search engine optimisation (SEO) has been published by MarketingSherpa.

Among its recommendations are creating top quality content – such as useful applications like loan calculators – and turning to link bait such as quirky stories, competitions and giveaways.

Getting such pages posted to websites such as Reddit and Digg can do much for a site's inbound linking, as can actively targeting sites to post links to the website in question – but only if these sites are deemed to be high quality by search engines.

When it comes anchor text, MarketingSherpa said: "Do not ask every person linking to your site to use the same anchor text. Search engines penalise sites that have too many inbound links with the same text; it skews their results."

It added: "They argue that 'naturally' created links would have more variance."

According to Mark Jackson of Search Engine Watch, creating a blog can help to generate relevant inbound links.
