Google has topped an index of the search engines and portals that American consumers are most satisfied with.
The search giant obtained a score of 86 - up 10.3 per cent compared with last year's figure of 78 - in the University of Michigan's latest American Customer Satisfaction Index.
Yahoo! saw its score fall slightly to 77 compared with 2007, while Microsoft's MSN portal experienced no change with a mark of 75.
Larry Freed, ForeSee Results chief executive and author of the report, told the Seattle Times that Google's success has set a benchmark for others striving to offer the best ways of searching the internet.
"It gives [consumers] the expectation coming in that this is the way to search. As long as Google meets that expectation, they're going to do well," he commented.
Google's popularity was recently underlined by a recent Hitwise report showing that the search engine surpassed the 70 per cent mark in terms of US market share in July.
