Microsoft: Google only ahead in search

8th November 2007

Microsoft has said it cannot comment on how the launch of Google's Android will affect the market as they are "just words on paper".

Android is a software package for mobile phones, developed with a number of technology and telecom companies. Google announced its launch on Monday.

Microsoft announced its Windows Live programming package in the US on Tuesday. The software includes email, blogging, photo-sharing and instant messaging applications.

Chief executive of Microsoft Steve Ballmer denied Google was ahead in any way other than global searches.

"Google is not ahead of us," he said. "In the area of search specifically, Google would lead."

According to data measurement company comScore, Google powered 57 per cent of searches in the US in September 2007. Yahoo! conducted 24 per cent and Microsoft was the third most popular search engine with just over ten per cent.
