Microsoft finds a voice

16th October 2007

A new voice-activated search engine is being launched by Microsoft.

The location-aware application can be downloaded on to Windows-based mobile phones and will allow users to find listings, maps, directions and free directory assistance.

According to Microsoft, the service incorporates 3D visuals with birds eye imagery, local search with user generated content and virtual earth platform updates.

"These improvements build on the work we did in core relevance and differentiated vertical experiences, and are an important milestone in our efforts in delivering a comprehensive, innovative search," said Satya Nadella, corporate vice president of the Search and Advertising Platform Group at Microsoft.

The service is free and based on a voice-recognition process developed by TellMe Networks which Microsoft bought earlier this year.

In a recent survey by Nielsen/NetRatings, Microsoft took the number three spot in top internet search providers during September, behind Google and Yahoo!.
