Google buys mobile social network

10th October 2007

Micro-blogging application, Jaiku has been bought by Google for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition follows Google's recent purchase of Zingku, another mobile social network company.

According to the website, users of Jaiku can update their status, write messages and add photos through the internet via a computer or a mobile phone.

Google product manager Tony Hsieh wrote on a company blog that the application will make staying in touch easier, no matter how hectic a lifestyle you lead.

He said: "We're excited about helping drive the next round of developments in web and mobile technology."

The acquisition is announced amid widespread speculation over Google's new mobile phone. Several reports say that the search engine is aiming to extend its dominance in the internet advertising world to the mobile industry.

According to the New York Times, the new Google phone will be subsidised by screen advertising and the company is hoping phone manufacturers will be offering the handset based on its software.
