Yahoo! teams up with Telefonica

3rd October 2007

Yahoo! has entered into an advertising-revenue based deal with Spanish mobile phone operator Telefonica, it has been reported.

According to the Telegraph, the deal emphasises the search engine's desire to generate more revenue from advertising.

Following the deal, Yahoo! will be able to reach around 100 million consumers worldwide, the newspaper claims.

Telefonica owns the O2 network, among other interests, and the deal will see Microsoft's MSN replaced as the search tool of choice across all Telefonica networks.

According to Geraldine Wilson, vice president of Yahoo! Europe mobile division, advertising revenue from mobile internet search will be more lucrative than PC-based searches.

"There are a number of different targeting advertising options we can do," she explained, adding that "demographics, geographics and behavioural facts can be used".

Yahoo! was recently declared to be the most popular search engine in Japan, ahead of its traditional rival Google.
