Google sees search gains in UK, US, Australia

16th July 2008

Google has increased its share of the search market in the UK, the US and Australia, according to a new report.

Compiled by Hitwise, the statistics revealed that Google accounted for 87 per cent of UK searches, just over 69 per cent of the US market and 87.7 per cent of the sector in Australia.

In the UK, Yahoo! reached four per cent of the national search audience, while Microsoft's MSN engine took a 3.72 per cent slice of the market.

Hitwise also emphasised the trend of internet users turning to search engines to look for industry-specific online information, particularly that related to health and medical matters, travel and online shopping.

In March, more than a third of all UK web traffic originated from Google sites, according to a separate Hitwise report released earlier this year.

The company states that Google.co.uk is the most visited Google website in the UK.
