Companies are using futile tactics in their attempts to optimise search engine performance, it has been claimed.
Writing for E-consultancy, Patrick Altoft observes that a number of worthless search engine optimisation (SEO) tactics are still widely used by firms that are not receiving professional advice on SEO.
Techniques such as blog spamming - irrelevant because blog comments are "worthless" in terms of SEO - and mass directory submission are among those derided by Mr Altoft on his blog post.
Forum signature links, bulk article submission and link exchange requests are also commonly employed yet useless tactics, according to the blogger.
"Of course sometimes these techniques might give some results but the way that they are generally approached makes the chance of any ranking improvement almost zero," he claims.
His comments come as Yahoo! reveals that companies are now able to exclude a maximum of 250 keywords, which a post on the company's Search Marketing blog claims should improve conversion rates.
