Google's share of total searches in the US reached a record high of 66 per cent during December.
According to online competitive intelligence service Hitwise, the leading search engine has increased its share percentage by seven per cent during 2007, performing 64 per cent of all the US searches during the year.
Yahoo!, MSN and Ask.com search engines all decreased in popularity between November and December, performing 21 per cent, seven per cent and four per cent respectively.
"Search engines continue to be the primary way internet users navigate to key industry categories," reports Hitwise, claiming that travel, entertainment, business, finance and sport saw traffic from search engines double throughout 2007.
Justilien Gaspard, an SEO consultant, recently commented on his Search Engine Watch blog that a number of businesses remain unaware how much traffic search engines can drive to their site.
He said that companies are missing out on visitors by not considering search engines when designing their website.
