SEO 'basic rules still apply'

4th January 2008

Although search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies have developed over the last decade, the fundamentals remain the same, claims an industry expert.

Jill Whalen, chief executive of search marketing firm High Rankings and co-founder of search marketing network organisation SEMNE, reports that factors such as site architecture and keywords remain high on SEO firms' agendas.

Making her comments on a Search Engine Land blog, Ms Whalen explained that an important requirement of SEO is ensuring that all pages of a website are linked together.

"[It] is important because the search engine spiders need to be able to 'crawl' throughout the different pages of your site in order to index them properly," she said.

She also reported that the industry is now at least ten times more competitive than it was in 2000, with at least ten billion pages indexed on Google.

The American Chronicle recently reported that businesses must "stay in tune" with the constant developments within the SEO industry in order to keep their website high in search engine rankings.
