No Gphone, just an Android

6th November 2007

Google has announced they are launching the Android, a platform for mobile devices.

The Android is a software package for mobile phones, developed in cooperation with the Open Handset Alliance - a number of technology and mobile companies including Motorola and T-Mobile.

It will allow developers to write applications for the platform, enhancing mobile phone functions.

The announcement follows speculation that Google was getting ready to launch a Gphone to rival Apple's iPhone. Google claims the Android is more "significant and ambitious" than a single phone.

"We hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users with new applications and new capabilities we can't imagine today," said Andy Rubin, director of mobile platforms for Google.

According to Portio Research company, subscribed mobile users will reach three billion by the end of this year and worldwide mobile penetration will pass 50 per cent in 2008.
