'Search engine traffic is valuable to business'

Websites are missing out on visitors by not factoring search engines into the initial site design, claims Search Engine Watch.

It explains that many businesses do not know exactly how much traffic search engines can drive to their site.

"Even if a site doesn't directly sell a product, top rankings for a product or brand name are essential to public relations and marketing strategies. You want to control the message with potential consumers," says SEO consultant Justilien Gaspard.

Businesses are also advised to clearly tag web pages with anchor text, clarifying what each page is about. Such clarification is rewarded by search engines as it makes it easier for them to understand what the page is about.

Subject-specific pages also generate more natural links, increasing traffic directed to the site from others.

The Internet Advertising Bureau recently advised that businesses should seek professional help with search engine optimisation as it can be hard to find good advice on the internet.
