Over 60 billion searches by over 750 million people

11th October 2007

Internet searches reached 61 billion during August, according to a new study by social media measurement group comScore. It estimated that the searches were carried out by over 750 million users.

The Asia-Pacific region saw the most search activity with 258 million people carrying out 20.3 billion searches. They were followed by Europe with 210 million people performing 16 billion searches.

Google came out as the industry leader, performing over 60 per cent of searches worldwide. Yahoo! came second carrying out 14 per cent.

"With the tremendous volume of search activity occurring around the world, search continues to present an abundance of marketing opportunities to companies on both a global and local scale," said Bob Ivins, executive vice president of international markets at comScore.

A recent survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Interactive Advertising Bureau revealed that advertising displayed alongside search results makes up about 40 per cent of online advertising revenues.

The number of internet users worldwide was estimated at 1.1 billion by Internet World Stats back in March.
