Marketers pursuing search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques should evaluate their competitors' link building strategies, according to one blog post.

Writing on Search Engine Journal, Ann Smarty observes that exploring the ways in which other members of a sector build links can boost a firm's SEO, especially if they have little experience of the field.

A tool called SEOquake plugin can be used to find the most powerful pages linking to competitors, the expert explains.

Meanwhile, Yahoo!'s search tools enable professionals to analyse their competitor's deep linking strategy as well as their niche link building strategy.

"An advanced analysis may also include your competitor's brand penetration and saturation, audience and overall website growth rate analysis," she writes.

Yahoo! search marketers are now able to exclude a greater number of keywords, the company revealed earlier this week.

Companies are now able to exclude 250 words and phrases, up from the previous limit of 20 terms.
