Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a lengthy process and therefore online brands need to design their Christmas 2008 strategy now, it has been claimed.
Carrie Hill, a certified search engine marketing expert and promotion account manager for Blizzard Internet Marketing, made her comments on a Search Engine Watch blog, claiming that companies should be planning ahead.
Ms Hill said that keyword research was the foundation of a successful campaign and that firms also need to consider what kind of website is best for them when planning SEO.
She commented: "Great rankings aren't usually stumbled upon by luck - it takes practice, testing, patience and education to get great rankings."
Companies who are unhappy with the performance of their pay-per-click campaigns were advised to try bidding solely on their own brand for a period in order to guarantee returns.
The American Chronicle recently reported that simply building a website is not enough to guarantee online traffic and that SEO was crucial to improving business.
