UK advertisers spend more on internet ads

12th December 2007

UK advertisers spend more money per person on internet advertising than any other country, it has been claimed.

A report by Ofcom found that advertisers are spending £33 per person on internet advertising in the UK, which is double their French, German and Italian counterparts combined.

For the first time, advertisers are allocating more money to online advertising than magazine campaigns, it revealed. It also made up more than the total spending on outdoor, cinema and radio advertising collectively.

Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive, said: "The report shows that convergence, bundling and the move to digital communications is a powerful global phenomenon."

The report also revealed that overall figures show that UK men and women use the internet equally. However in the 18-34 age group, 57 per cent of time spent on the internet is by women and 43 per cent by men.

UK web surfers were found to be the most frequent social networkers in Europe, with four in ten adults regularly visiting the sites.

Research by comScore found that 78 per cent of the total UK online community visited a social network site during August.
