Google 'not preparing' UK wireless bid

20th November 2007

Google is not planning to become the UK's national wireless broadband provider, according to the Register.

The news provider reports that Chris Sacca, head of special initiatives for Google, is meeting regulators of Ofcom but the firm is not planning a move similar to it's $4.6 billion (£2.2 billion) wireless plan in the US.

"We're not preparing a bid [in the UK] and we're not looking for partners," he said, explaining that the meeting was to establish UK wireless regulations.

The market in the UK is not affected by lack of competition like the US, he added, suggesting there was no need for Google to get involved when spectrum is auctioned off over the next two years.

Google's billion dollar bid in the US is to face "fierce opposition" from Verizon and At&T, according to the Times, as it is currently the country's largest telecom providers.
