Yahoo! newspaper group still growing

19th November 2007

As the Yahoo! newspaper group prepares for its one-year anniversary it has acquired 17 more newspapers, reports the Associated Press.

The Columbus Dispatch and 16 of the New York Times' regional newspapers joined the group, making a total of 415 daily and 140 weekly publications since its launch in November 2006.

Newspapers in the consortium integrate their classified advertising listing with Yahoo!'s online recruitment database HotJobs.

Leon Levitt, digital media vice president for Cox Enterprise - one of the companies in the group - said the partnership has "gone very well" so far and that the company's ad share in Austin, Texas for example, has increased from 19 per cent to 40 per cent in a year.

The news provider reports that the New York Times itself has not joined as it has significantly higher traffic than other newspaper websites.

Media Post recently revealed that newspaper online ad growth has fallen to about 20 per cent for the first half of 2007 and continued to slow for the third quarter, reports Editorsweblog.org. This is compared to an annual growth rate of between 30 per cent and 40 per cent a year recently.
