$10 million prize for Android developers

13th November 2007

Developers building new applications for Google's Android will have a chance of winning $10 million (£4.8 million).

Android is a new software package recently launched by Google in cooperation with various technology and mobile companies including Motorola and T-Mobile.

The alliance is now looking for developers to create applications "that surprise and delight mobile users".

"We welcome all types of applications but are looking to reward innovative useful apps that make use of Android's capabilities to deliver a better mobile experience," the website states.

The $10 million prizes are to be divided into separate awards of $25,000 to $275,000 and applications will be accepted between January 2nd and March 3rd 2008.

Google suggests a number of areas that developers could focus on, including social networking, media editing or sharing, and gaming.

According to data measurement company comScore, Google was the leading search engine in the US during September 2007, powering nearly 60 per cent of searches.
