Yahoo! powers health search

17th October 2007

Online health information provider WebMD has signed an exclusive search and advertising deal with Yahoo!

The deal will provide Yahoo! sponsored searches across all the WebMD sites in a multi-year advertising contract. According to the search engine, its ad platform will allow advertisers to reach an extended audience and consumers will be able to access more relevant health marketing messages.

WebMD sites are aimed at consumers, healthcare professionals and employers, and include WebMD Health, MedicineNet, eMedicine Health and RxList.

"This agreement ushers in a new era of collaboration and value creation for marketers seeking qualified audiences, consumers demanding relevant experiences, and for our collective organisations as we look to build upon our unique strengths," said Todd Teresi, senior vice president of the Yahoo! Publishers Network.

According to an eMarketer report, health and pharmaceutical companies online ad spending is to reach $1 billion (£492 million) in 2008.

Yahoo!'s shares are up by ten per cent after releasing 2007's third quarter earnings. This follows a fall in share prices over the previous six months.
