Bing, Google, Industry News, Microsoft, Yahoo

With details of the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo now well and truly publicised (I even saw a piece in The Sun where a page 3 model was discussing what she liked about Bing), it is time to take a look at exactly what this means for the future of UK search, Yahoo and Bing.

29th July 2009 saw confirmation of a deal between Microsoft and Yahoo that will result in Microsoft taking ownership of Yahoo’s search activities for the next 10 years. Unlike past attempts to strike a deal with Yahoo from Microsoft and Google, this deal will see no upfront payments to Yahoo in favour of a revenue share model, instead Yahoo will receive 88% of the revenue from ad sales from its own sites for the first 5 years. Although still vulnerable to government regulators (a fate that ended the previous attempt at a Google / Yahoo partnership) the deal looks likely to stick and will have an impact across both businesses and search as a whole. Google to release an operating system?

Since the launch of Bing, the rivalry between Google and Microsoft heated up in recent months, add that to the browser wars of Google Chrome and Internet Explorer and you can only see the competition intensifying further. Well, it just has.

Google announced on their blog that they plan to launch an operating system by the name of Google Chrome OS. It is said to be a natural extension of Google Chrome, an operating system designed to incorporate the modern day usage of the internet and set a new standard of operating systems.

Google Analytics Account Set-Up Best Practice

Google Adwords, Google Analytics

We have recently taken on a client whose previous web development company set-up an analytics account and, upon gaining access, we quickly became aware that it was under the dreaded all sites account. Put simply, this means we cannot gain admin access which has a knock on effect on several key areas:

  1. The ability to link AdWords and Analytics accounts which, until Google’s update regarding cost data reporting meant all CPC traffic was recorded as direct.
  2. The inability to create new profiles  which are essential for testing and segmentation
  3. The inability to apply filters essential for filtering out your own IP. Applying filters also has some very powerful data manipulation uses.
