Google Click Through Rate Data… Even Less Accurate Than We Thought!

Inspired by Neil Walker’s post on determining natural click through rate by position, I’ve been playing around with Google’s click through rate and average position data that is now available via Webmaster Tools.

There are lots of great obvious – and not so obvious – things you can do with the data, but that’s for a later post. Today I’m going to highlight a few fundamental problems I’ve spotted with the data. (more…)

Google Launches Site Performance Tool

clockv1A fair amount of attention has gone into Google Webmaster Tools recently with a re-skin and several new features. We can now welcome a new and important feature to that list.

If you were to go to your Webmaster Tools today, you’ll find a new option under the ‘Labs’ tab called ‘Site Performance’. In a nutshell, this new tool provides you with a visual representation of the time it takes for your website to load.

In addition to this, the tool also provides you with tips on how to improve the overall load time of specific pages on your website. This includes areas such as combining CSS files, combining JavaScript files, using gzip compression as well as minimising the amount of DNS look-ups required on any one page. (more…)

Google Now Crawling RSS & Atom Feeds

Feed IconOver on Google’s Webmaster Central Blog, it has been announced that the leading search engine are now using RSS/Atom feeds to discover new URLs to add to their index. The aim of this new method is to reduce the time it takes to find and index a new webpage.

Here’s what Google have to say about it:

“Using feeds for discovery allows us to get these new pages into our index more quickly than traditional crawling methods. We may use many potential sources to access updates from feeds including Reader, notification services, or direct crawls of feeds.” (more…)

Google see the 410 Server Response Code as "More Permanent" than a 404 Response Code

google-110809A 404 server response status code means “page not found” and the 410 server response simply means “gone”.

For as long as I can remember, search engines have treated both these codes in the same way, with them both meaning that nothing is returned on a certain URL.

But reading a Google webmaster help thread from yesterday, Google employee John Mu stated that this is no longer the case and that Google is now treating these codes slightly differently. (more…)
