Over the last ten years, the main criteria for success in natural search has shifted many times. We started with “Spam.” Spam that ALT text, stuff those keywords in, hide that content using white text. Next came “Links.” Get them! Get as many as you can as fast as you can. Get the anchor text set to your main keyword. Then it was “Content Is King.” Spend five minutes writing some throw away text. Submit to 1,000 article directories. Add text wherever you can. What businesses are spending on advertising is usually a good way to measure how well our economy is doing. In times of recession for many businesses their advertising budget is usually the first to go.
WPP, one of the largest advertising groups in the world, if not the largest, has over the last two years reported revenue falls varying between 5-10%, lost 14000 employees and had to put a ban on hiring new people. I think this really represents what has been happening to businesses in the UK on a macro level. (more…)
Eco Friendly Branding
Friday, September 10th, 2010I cannot count the number of times I have looked in my fridge or in cupboards and felt guilty about the amount of packaging used on products just to make them look appealing. Whilst I try and recycle as much as I can I know that many households do not, and I constantly think about the volume of lager bottles, coffee jars and biscuit tins that must end up in land fill each week. As much I want there to be a quick solution to this, I then think about the consumer and how we are drawn to colourful and interesting branding and wonder would something look as appealing wrapped in eco friendly packaging? The answer is no – unless you have an incredibly strong brand, which means many companies are not willing to change this through fear of declining sales! (more…)
