I would agree with you, except that profit margins and returns on investment appear to be alien concepts to a number of Adwords advertisers (see my blog post about how numpties are ruining it for everyone).

If people limited their bids to what the clicks were worth, it would make no real difference, but if people start viewing a page one advert position as an objective, they could easily start increasing their bids to ensure they get there...

In reality, this hasn't really happened, but I'm sure that there are times when somebody has increased their bids by a few pence because Adwords tells them to!

Im not totally sure that this will lead to bidding wars. I can see how it certainly could at first glace because you are directly telling people what it costs to get on the first page BUT don't Ad Quality scores off set that?

the other side of that coin is that each business has a certain profit margin and there is a point where they just cant afford to keep bidding more and more, so I dont think keyword prices will spiral out of control.

Well, I agree too, and we must not forget that Google is a profit generating entity. It pays to have the best optimized landing pages created for your campaigns. And, then I mean, one landing page PER keyword. Yah... I know, what if you have thousands of keywords? That is a lot of work. On average, it takes around 400 hours or so to create a profitable Adwords campaign I was told. I was also told that the whole process can be automated with optimal and maximum results. Thanks for your efforts here. Truly valuable.

I have to agree with you. I think the new system can lead to more bidding wars. The old system leaves advertisers more in the dark as to how much they need to increase their bid. The new system spells it out. Only time will tell and we'll have to wait to see how it affects business.
