Funny story. I wrote a similar post on my blog a few minutes ago and when I was ready to publish, it suggested I link to your post. Looks like if I write a post about something then WordPress recommends a related one.

Good post. I'm intrigued by ifttt too.

Hi Aaron,
Glad the post helped out.
To be honest, the two main culprits in my case accounted for such a massive % of the overall traffic that I was happy just to ask for these to be excluded and nothing else. The percentage of traffic from Amazon and Ebay will obviously vary depending on your industry, but I presume if they could do it for these, they could do it for any.
Let me know how you get on.

Thanks

Hi Matt,

I never realised that Google AM's are able to do this from their side.

Have you been able to opt-out of all those partners that have not performed for your campaigns, or are Google only able to opt-out of specific partners?

Thanks for the helpful post.

This is why it sucks to work in the SEO industry, Google thinks I am somewhere between 8 and 80, either interested in car insurance, mobile phones, solid wood flooring, renting, holidaying at club 18-30 or through saga ...

The issue here (in my opinion) is that the new EU directive regarding cookies, well it was really created to stop this sort of thing!

Useful article Peter, Insights can be a great source of information for search marketing campaigns.

I'd recommend creating a dashboard in netvibes with the specific insights results you want to monitor for each client. It makes it quick and easy to stay on top of industry trends.

Whilst I completely agree that SOPA was bordering on Big Brother heavyhandedness I do believe that something should be done about those copying and distributing for free products and services that people have invested time and money in to make profit.
The excuse "Well everyone does it" would not hold true if there was a physical object being pirated/stolen. When the British media gives so many column inches to a short fat chef stealing some cheese spare a thought for those loosing billions due to online piracy and the fact that these industries then charge the general public more claiming that they have to make up for the piracy (case in point the expense of going to the cinema).
Facebook and Google earn millions a day from advertising and would never blackout unless a bill was definitely being passed that would cost them far more in the long term.
So Wikipedia went down for a day. Maybe journalists will have to verify their facts better and no one fully believes me that one of the Sheriff's guards in Maid Marian's Merry Men is now a succesful crime novelist (he is) without being able to check his wiki page but are people really fighting for a fair internet for all or just enjoying being part of a group sticking it to the American government?

Hi,

I think the closure was a shame because it was one of the only free tools that gave you nearly every backlink. Most free datasets give you a limited glimpse at backlinks, aren’t updated as regularly and aren’t as quick to use.

Paid for tools give great datasets and analysis but I don’t always want to see the very best links indexed, I want to see the spam and chaff – YSE used to tell me exactly how bad some of a sites links were. It was a great way to see if they were building bad links.

In the office a lot of people are raving about the QBL tool by LinkResearchTools (http://www.linkresearchtools.com/tools/qbl/). A review can be found here: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/site-explorer-yahoo-alternative-linkresearchtools/37563/.

Hi Amy,

There's some really fantastic advice in this post. It's great to see that Google is putting more emphasis on rewarding unique, fresh content (and penalising content scrapers/link farms). As you say, the key nowadays it to be "contemporary and relevant".

I think that PR and SEO are fast becoming one and the same. Throw the PR and SEO value that social media can have into that mix, and it's an exciting time for digital marketers.

Best wishes, Alex

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for your views on the topic.
I wasn't attempting to mislead with having an active alert. I think the fact that the account is carrying an alert isn't a reason to pardon the faulty layout. A lot of accounts will be carrying some form of alert and the way it is currently dealt with perhaps isn't the most effective.
In my new design, there is a large area just below the change history button that could be utilised for this purpose.

I think you missed the date selector in my new layout, its now placed in the top left, as opposed to the top right.

I also agree that currently its a pretty good layout, certainly much better then any of the competition, but I believe there is always room for improvement. There could be a better balance between the need to see as much data as possible and the use of white space.

Can't say I agree. For starters your example screenshot is misleading as it's carrying an alert, which exaggerates the amount of wasted space we normally see.

Secondly you've carelessly thrown out the date range selector, which is a pretty crucial feature.

Finally, good design isn't just about fitting as much space into the screen as possible. That white space has an aesthetic purpose. If real estate is that much of an issue for you perhaps you should get an extra monitor, or a bigger one.

It's a pretty good layout. It would be nice to be able to customise whether certain features appear for you as default, but beyond that there's not much which could be done to improve it.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for leaving a comment. It is a great resource and you don't often see people linking out to all the places that inspired them. A definite go to article for any new link builder wanting to learn about guest posting.

I'll have to go and take a look at the new interface - I think you're still offering the 14 day free trial. For anyone interested in Ontolo visit http://ontolo.com/link-building-tools for information on their tools. For a quick overview there is quite a good review at http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2072839/Backlink-Tool-Review-Ontolo.

Thanks again,

Hey Jake,

Thanks for the mention! Glad to hear how useful you've found it to be.

We also just released a new interface and search tools for the Ontolo toolset, which automates a large portion of link prospecting. Our customers are really loving the new design and tools.

Thanks again for the mention!

Hi Paul,

Another good (and reasonable) question. And I say reasonable as you'd expect a feature like this to exist.

Simple answer, it doesn't... yet.

At this moment in time you can only 'manage' or delete your page totally. So the 'manage' button is a little cheeky as it just takes you to your business page so you can add content etc. The delete button - I think you know what that'll do ;)

To find these options, click on the drop down menu which shows your page(s) and at the bottom of the list, you'll see 'Manage Pages' or type https://plus.google.com/pages/manage into your browser.

Rumour has it that transfer of ownership will be available in the future as will multiple admins according to this website: http://google-plus.com/2830/google-pages-multiple-admin-page-analytics-and-ownership-transfer-coming-soon/. Although, I'm too sure how credible a source that website is.

It's another feature desperately required to compete with Facebook and for those that build larger communities to be able to comfortably manage it. Or as you say, should an employee quit, how do you remove access from either employee or employer side?

You can keep up to date with Google's official G+ blog: http://googleplusplatform.blogspot.com/
...and their G+ product page: http://www.google.com/+/business/index.html

I setup our page while logged in to google as my personal person. Of course the +page now has me linked as administrator. What if I want to quit this company and move on? I see the comment above indicates that there is no ability to have multiple administrators but how can I simply change the administrator to a google account setup for this purpose?

Thanks Mike,

Hi Fay, thanks for referencing the Knight Foundation report we put together on nonprofit news ventures and their sustainability! http://www.knightfoundation.org/publications/getting-local-how-nonprofit-news-ventures-seek-sus

I hadn't seen the Fleetstreetblue site before. I'll check it out.

On the question about going non-profit or for-profit, here's a great article written by Jim Fruchterman 'For Love or Lucre'. It's about the social sector in general, but has a useful decision making framework in it that's applicable to this conversation: http://www.ssireview.org/articles/entry/for_love_or_lucre

Dixon: I agree Dixon, linking out once or multiple times might distribute link juice but the return in power can be higher. As you’ve said, this is because you’re more likely to get bloggers and webmasters talking about the content and linking to it – almost like mini link bait/ego bait. I’d rather have a powerful piece and share the link juice than a weak piece and take almost nothing – I’m sure others would disagree.

Garrett: Thanks for the comment. I think that sometimes tools like these are overlooked for the bigger backlink analyses tools – settling to do the rest manually. Anything that can quicken the process of sourcing potential outreach contacts is a winner in my book. This frees up time to check the quality of sites more thoroughly and really engage with every site on an individual level. I think that anyone reading this should probably watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwEQTnIJWis.

Sebastian: I haven’t personally used the CLA tool but will make sure I do. Every tool in the LRT toolset I have tried has been really useful so far so I can imagine this one also delivers a very useful set of data. I’ll give the CLA tool a try and let you know how I get on with it – thanks for pointing it out.

Certainly. It's a bit of a twisted pride thing, it often seems; people go out of their way to give a story their own "edge", even though the story's not theirs. Stories that are widely reported are technically fine to use under the spotlight of media law, though too many people seem to overlook the fact that quotes, angles and structures of text are still protected and unique - if I had a pound for every unattributed-yet-copied quote...

Hi Jake!

Thanks for mentioning the Link Research tools in your article!

I'd like to also recommend taking a look at the Competitive Landscape Analyzer - it analyzes your site and compares it to your top 10 competitors for your keyword/niche in your country/language. It's great to identify how you have to change your linkbuilding strategy to get to rank among the top results.
It's extremely simple to use and is the favorite competition analysis tool among our clients.
